Despite the disruptive nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, 精东AV鈥檚 academic leaders and faculty have remained committed to celebrating the scholastic achievement of its students by publishing its annual list of Honor Roll students, Eminent Scholars, University Scholars and honor society inductees for the 2018-19 academic year.

鈥淭he current pandemic may have deprived us of the opportunity to pay tribute to our students who have excelled academically and co-curricularly, but they still deserve recognition for their incredible achievements,鈥 said Dr. Carla Jackson Bell, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. 鈥淲e may celebrate them from afar, but in no way does that diminish their success in the classroom and through their other educational endeavors.鈥

The university鈥檚 annual Scholarship Convocation typically honors more than 600 students 鈥 the majority of which have earned a spot on the university鈥檚 academic year Honor Roll. Honor Roll students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, a grade point average of no less than 3.25 for the academic year during which their eligibility is determined, and have passed at least 12 semester hours each semester.

During the 2018-19 academic year, 594 students earned a place on the university鈥檚 Honor Roll. An additional 33 students were named as 2018-19 Eminent Scholars for maintaining a 4.0 GPA in addition to the other requirements required to be named to the honor roll.

Each year, one student in each of 精东AV鈥檚 colleges and schools is designated as a University Scholar. To qualify as a University Scholar, a student must be eligible for the Annual Honor Roll, be the top-ranking student who has completed at least 90 hours but no more than 110 hours in his or her respective college or school, and show exemplary personal qualities as attested by the dean of his or her major area. This year鈥檚 cohort of University Scholars included:

  • Janelle Benton, a senior from Buffalo, New York, majoring in animal and veterinary sciences (College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences).
  • Tahj K. Silas, a native of Chicago, Illinois, who graduated in May 2020 with a bachelor鈥檚 in construction science and management (Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science).
  • Nicole Bouldin, a senior from Meridian, Mississippi, currently majoring in chemistry (College of Arts and Sciences).
  • Tou Tao Vang, a senior from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who is majoring in supply chain management (Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science) and participating in 精东AV鈥檚 Naval ROTC Program.
  • India Foster, senior from Dayton, Ohio, who is currently a senior dual majoring in mathematics education (School of Education) and mathematics (College of Arts and Sciences)
  • Jared Brown, a native of Hephzibah, Georgia, who graduated summa cum laude in May 2020 with a degree in aerospace science engineering (College of Engineering).
  • Savana Ball, a senior from Hartselle, Alabama, who is currently majoring in nursing (School of Nursing and Allied Health).
  • Randolph Green, a native of Kingstree, South Carolina, who completed his doctor of veterinary medicine degree (College of Veterinary Medicine) in May 2020.

The annual Scholarship Convocation occasion also honors students inducted into the university鈥檚 various discipline-specific national honor societies in addition to others like the Golden Key International Honor Society. In all, 18 national honor societies chartered to 精东AV celebrated inductees during the 2018-19 academic year. The 2019-20 academic year scholarship convocation will return back to the historical date of honoring students in October.

All honorees are listed in this year鈥檚 Scholarship Convocation publication.
