Victim to Victory book cover, author Tisha Dickson-NicksonOn Thursday, Jan. 17, ¾«¶«AVā€™s Office of Title IX Programs will host a Survivorsā€™ Forum for both those recovering from and those supporting victims of sexual violence. The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Tompkins Hall Auditorium.

The forum will include recovery resources for victims, as well as for family, friends and professionals who support them during their recovery. Central to the forum will be author Tisha Dickson-Nickson, who shares her own personal account as a sex trafficking survivor in her book, Victim to Victory: My Journey from Sex Slavery to Freedom in Christ. Written as a first-person memoir, Dickson-Nicksonā€™s book recounts how she was sold by her mother to a well-known drug dealer, 21 years her senior, who raped and beat her. She credits strength from God and her faith with being able to later forgive her mother, care for her during a life-threating illness, and truly love her mother until her death.

Today, in addition to sharing her story, Dickson-Nickson serves as director of marketing for a Montgomery, Alabama-based assisted living company, and worked in the legal field before her current duties. She and her husband, who serves as a church pastor, have four children and three grandchildren.

ā€œSharing personal stories and accounts like Ms. Dickson-Nicksonā€™s helps our students who have been victims of sexual violence better understand that they are not alone ā€” and that they have a voice,ā€ said Tiyahri Wilson, the universityā€™s Title IX coordinator. ā€œMore importantly, though, is that these stories of triumph demonstrate that, through support and advocacy programs like Title IX, victims can overcome instances of sexual assault and abuse.ā€

Thursdayā€™s Survivorsā€™ Forum is the first of several Title IX programs planned during the spring semester. Others include:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 12: ā€œInclusion Symposium: We are Better Together,ā€ 6:30 p.m., Tompkins Hall Auditorium
  • Tuesday, Mar. 19: Mandatory Title IX training for university faculty and staff, Brimmer Hall Auditorium, 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 16: ā€œRolling Away Domestic Violence,ā€ 3:15 p.m., White Hall Lawn
  • Wednesday, May 1: ā€œStop the Violenceā€ March, 4 p.m., Bioethics Center lawn to Margaret Murray Washington Hall
