As provost, Sara is the university鈥檚 chief academic officer and represents the university when the president is unavailable. The provost oversees all academic colleges and schools, graduate studies and research, the library, distance education, research and sponsored programs, and the chapel. He reports to the president and serves as a member of the president鈥檚 Executive Council.

After joining the faculty of what is now the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science in 1973, he served as the college鈥檚 associate dean from 1989 to 1999, and as its dean from 2007 until he retired in 2016. His teaching and research focus has included strategic management, international business, finance, economics and economic development.

鈥淒r. Sara鈥檚 keen academic, strategic and business insights will be a tremendous asset to the Office of the Provost and the university鈥檚 leadership team as a whole,鈥 said Interim President Charlotte P. Morris. 鈥淗e is beloved and well-respected by his colleagues, students and alumni alike, and I very much appreciate his return from retirement to lead the academic aspects of the university.鈥

After graduating from California State University with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business and economics, Sara worked with Mattel Inc. in its inventory management division. He joined the 精东AV faculty while completing his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Massachusetts. During his tenure on the 精东AV faculty, Sara鈥檚 collaborations with corporations, foundations and government agencies garnered more than $7.7 million in research funding and 20-plus publications in various academic and industry journals.

Along with Sara鈥檚 appointment, the university has appointed two vice provosts to assist Sara and Dr. Tamara Floyd-Smith, who continues in her role as assistant provost. Dr. Ruby Perry, in addition to her role as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, will serve concurrently as the university鈥檚 vice provost for undergraduate education. Dr. Walter Hill, dean of the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences, will serve concurrently as the university鈥檚 vice provost for academic affairs, as well as land-grant, community engagement, integrative and sustainability affairs.
