Updated 11/6/2018: times and locations added for the Nov. 9 events.
On Friday, Nov. 9, AV students aspiring for careers in the entertainment, media and communication industries will have a chance to learn more about a program that can make their goals a reality.
Entertainment industry veteran Stacy Milner will speak with students about her latest venture — the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program — which has joined forces with the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and some of Hollywood’s major studios, networks and talent agencies to launch the HBCUs in LA Internship Program.
“This first-of-its-kind, Los Angeles-based HBCU internship program will provide students with a real-world, immersive and educational opportunity — not to mention the experience essential for launching and leveraging a career in Hollywood’s coveted inner circle,” Milner said.
Launched the summer of 2017, the program continues to provide students access to and opportunities in an industry where minority groups are traditionally underrepresented.
“By connecting students from HBCUs like AV to career opportunities in the entertainment industry, we are helping the industry meet its diversity and inclusion goals, as well as employ a workforce that is reflective of the communities and audiences it serves,” she emphasized.
Two events on Friday will comprise Milner’s campus visit to promote the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program. Times and locations are pending and will be updated here once they are finalized:
11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Entertainment Career Forum for Students, “Navigating a Career in the Entertainment Industry”
Bioethics Auditorium, John A. Kenney Hall
This dynamic presentation will provide students with an overview of the HBCU in LA Internship Program through the lens of a behind-the-scenes, high-definition look at Hollywood careers and what it takes to land a job in the industry. Students will take a journey inside the industry’s coveted inner circle and discuss everything from what it takes to get in on the ground level to working alongside major power players. Students will leave this presentation knowing what employers are looking for, the type of experience they want to see on a resume, and key characteristics that will make students stand out among the highly competitive pool of new industry hopefuls.
12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Faculty Meet-and-Greet
Bioethics Auditorium, John A. Kenney Hall
A special meet-and-greet opportunity will help faculty learn more about the internship program’s efforts to create access to and opportunities for HBCUs students in the entertainment industry. It will be a time to forge professional relationships and discuss the issues related to students transitioning successfully from academia into the competitive entertainment workforce.
A passionate supporter of diversity and inclusion, Milner devotes her time to training college students, recent graduates and new industry hopefuls on how to successfully navigate a career inside the tight-knit inner circles of Hollywood. Her passion for training and equipping the next generation is the driving force behind her workshop and book, “Leveraging UP! The Key to Launching your Entertainment Career.”
Milner’s career story mirrors the opportunities that lay before the next generation of entertainment industry professionals. The one-time assistant to the chairmen of NBC and Paramount Pictures got her start as a page at NBC before assisting the late NBC chief, Brandon Tartikoff. From that vantage point, she witnessed firsthand the maverick programming strategies that led the network to an unprecedented 68 straight wins in the weekly Nielsen’s ratings race. She later served as an assistant to Tartikoff’s successor, Warren Littlefield, and former network chairman, Robert Wright. After leaving NBC, she joined Paramount Pictures as the assistant to former TV Group chairman, Kerry McCluggage.
She is the founder of Executive Temps, one of the premiere employment agencies exclusively serving the entertainment industry for more than 30 years. Milner and her elite team are responsible for recruiting the best and brightest talent to meet the unique needs of major motion picture studios and television networks that are among the agency’s high-profile clients.
