Dr. Coppenger named inaugural coordinator for the CAS Online Liberal Studies

Dr. Brett Coppenger has been appointed inaugural coordinator for the CAS Online Liberal Studies bachelor of science and bachelor of arts programs. Dr. Coppenger joined 精东AV in 2014 as an associate professor of philosophy and played a pivotal role in the conception and development of the online programs. He has served as philosophy program coordinator since 2014 and faculty coordinator in the Office of Distance Education and Online Learning since 2016.  

Dr. Coppenger will oversee the curriculum plan and calendar, development of programming for the online degree programs, collaboration on student retention efforts, data reporting, and more.

"With immense enthusiasm, we welcome Dr. Coppenger to steer our new online liberal studies degrees, said Dr. Channapatna Prakash, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "His expertise and leadership are a great fit for our program, which is already resonating with potential students nationwide. We expect a marked increase in enrollment very soon, readying ourselves to shape promising minds for the future."

Dr. Coppenger earned his doctorate and master鈥檚 degrees in philosophy from the University of Iowa, as well as an master鈥檚 in philosophy from Western Michigan University.  He received his bachelor鈥檚 degree in philosophy from Biola University. 

His primary research areas are epistemology, the history, and philosophy of science, and religion. He has published books with Oxford University Press and Open Court and articles/book chapters with Oxford University Press, Blackwell, Brill, and others. 

Dr. Coppenger has received grants from the American Philosophical Association, the Council of Independent Colleges, and UNCF. In 2023, he was named a UNCF Teaching Fellow.

He serves as the co-director of the Lakeview Baptist Food Pantry and regularly teaches classes for the Alabama Prison Arts and Education Project. He and his wife Megan have five daughters.
