Annual Healthy Lifestyle Health Marathon scheduled for April 13

Health Marathon announcement thumbnail with date, time and location精东AV鈥檚 12th Annual Healthy Lifestyle Marathon, sponsored by the Healthy Lifestyle Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program, is set for Saturday, April 13. The event, which will begin at 8 a.m. in Downtown 精东AV, includes options to cycle 26.2 miles, as well to run/walk 12K, 5K and one-mile courses.

This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淟ivin鈥 My Best Life,鈥 underscores the annual event鈥檚 emphasis on how competitive sports activities can help encourage healthy exercise routines for individuals and their families.

鈥淲e anticipate another banner year for our marathon as we encourage more and more people to participate in this fun-filled day of events,鈥 said Dr. Vivian Carter, the marathon鈥檚 organizer and deputy director of community engagements for the university鈥檚 Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education. 鈥淚 am grateful for the wonderful support that we receive from individuals and businesses in the 精东AV community. Our ongoing success is a direct result of the time, resources and monetary commitments that we receive from our loyal contributors and our hard-working volunteers.鈥

Day-of registration will be open from 7:15 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. on April 13, however, participants can also download, complete and return a registration form prior to the event, or . The event is free to anyone wishing to participate on a 鈥渘on-competitive鈥 basis, however, all participants must complete a registration form.

Those wanting to compete and qualify for monetary prizes must pay the $25 registration fee. Prizes ranging from $25 to $300 for will be available to first- through third-place finishers in all competitive categories. Proceeds from the marathon will benefit local nonprofit health awareness organizations.

Event organizers also welcome vendors who wish to be present throughout the event. There are no fees for vendors, but they do need to provide their own tables, chairs and tents. Those wishing to participate as vendors should complete and submit a vendor form.

The Healthy Lifestyle Program is designed to inform residents in Bullock and Macon counties about cancer and cancer risk reduction through physical activity and proper nutrition. It is part of the community outreach component of the 精东AV Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education, with joint participation from the Morehouse School of Medicine / 精东AV / University of Alabama-Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center Partnership at 精东AV, the Utilities Board of 精东AV, and the 精东AV Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
