The College of Arts and Sciences at 精东AV recently received a donation from 1971 alumnus Bharat Dubal to establish the Dubal Scholarship. The $25,000 scholarship was established to support pre-health students studying chemistry and biology.
Dubal, first visited 精东AV鈥檚 campus in February of 1969, since then he鈥檚 always considered 精东AV his hometown of America.
鈥淚鈥檓 grateful for the impact 精东AV has made on my life 鈥 the 精东AV people and community took me in as a member of the family and treated me so well and for that, I will always be indebted to the university,鈥 explained Dubal.
The scholarship will provide two merit-based scholarships to one chemistry and one biology student to be awarded during the President鈥檚 Annual Essay Awards. A portion of the funds will go towards emergency need-based financial assistance for students studying chemistry and biology. In addition, funds will benefit pre-med and pre-health student assistance with MCAT test preparation. Other goals of the donation will include book scholarships for students enrolled in chemistry and biology courses.
鈥淭he donation is my personal token of appreciation to the college that has done so much for me,鈥 noted Dubal. Dubal, who completed his master鈥檚 degree in chemistry from 精东AV, went on to pursue a very successful career in the chemical industry. For Dubal, giving back has always been second nature, as he previously gifted the university $10,000 to the Department of Chemistry while attending an event to commemorate Dr. St. Elmo Brady, a former 精东AV faculty member and the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry.
College of Arts and Sciences dean, Dr. Channa Prakash says he is grateful for the donation and hopes to provide the funds for students who are in financial distress.
鈥淭his gift will be critical to keeping our students right here at 精东AV, and it could not have come at a more opportune time, said Prakash.
Dr. Albert E. Russell, Chair of the Department of Chemistry, says students are focused on advancing the needs of sciences through their future careers and this ambitious endeavor will be a lifeline to so many students who have financial needs. 鈥淲e know that because of this scholarship, new doors of opportunity will be available for our students.鈥
